HAPPENINGS March 2009

HAPPENINGS
March 2009

Things are finally getting started on the kitchen renovation:
Barry Fidelman called a work day and Hy and Shelly Warshawsky,
Minnie Pearce and BethAnn Pearce-Davis helped to empty everything from the upper cabinets. The cabinets were then removed for painting but then reconsidered
in favor of washing them thoroughly and placing a back-wall recovering.

The Board, by majority vote, decided to
have Stainless Steel placed before the cabinets are re-hung.

The end result of these efforts will be a Kosher Kitchen with two
of everything, including stoves, sinks, microvaves, refrigerators and great cabinet space.

A storage room behind the men's room has also undergone repairs,
it will soon be painted and have shelving installed.
The fire escape at the rear of the shul is repaired and up to code.
Gutters and soffits have been repaired.
Fencing in front and side of te building will be finished this spring .

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Published in South Haven Daily Tribune, MARCH 1959

South Haven's "Dolls for Democracy" were unveiled this week at the First Hebrew Congregation by Mrs. Mildred Green, chairman of the Anti-Defamation League of the B'nai Brith. A new and unique feature of the league's fight against prejudice and bigotry of any form, it is hoped that through displaying the dolls people of all races and religions will become better acquainted with individuals who have been and are "great for humanity."

The dolls on display are Dr. Jonas Salk, discoverer of the polio vaccine; David Ben-Gurion, prime minister of Israel; Jane Addams, America's leading social worker; George Washigton Carver, the famed agricultural chemist; Emma Lazarus, noted for her poem on the Statue of Liberty; and Pope Pius XII, the Pope of Peace.

The idea for "Dolls for Democracy" was first presented in Michigan by Dr. Morton Sobel, Michigan direcvtor of the ADL, four years ago.
